Azalea Cup 2018

For the 7th edition of the Azalea Cup, the tournament moved back to the Augusta Christian Schools football stadium, the site of the 2012 event. It was a round-robin format again, with three teams playing 9-a-side. Augusta had its largest showing yet for a tournament with 23 players, many of whom got their first taste of tournament action. We were joined by Charleston and a compilation of players from across the southeast. Opening ceremonies included a thank you from the Burn Foundation of America for Augusta Gaelic Sports Club raising money to help burn victims. We were also treated to a performance from the Aiken County Sherriff Department’s Pipe and Drum Band.

The first match was a tight one between the combined team and Augusta with the home team claiming a four-point victory. The second match pitted Charleston against SE Combined and was also close, with the combined team also winning by four. The cup came down to the final match for Augusta, win against Charleston and claim it for the first time since 2011, or go to a tie-breaker. After the first half, Augusta only led by a point, but they poured it on in the second half to win the cup again.

After the final whistle, players and supporters again traveled to Riverwatch Brewery in downtown Augusta, ate food from The Pot Smoker BBQ, and shared stories of the day's events.
